Federal Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) II – Emergency Grants for Students
In response to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic, the 2021 Federal Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRSAA) has provided an additional emergency financial aid grant for students called the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF II). This grant may be used to assist students who have exceptional needs related to educational costs, food, housing, healthcare or childcare.
HEERF II established the following criteria for student eligibility:
- Enrolled in Spring 2021 term as of 02/22/2021
- Have a completed 2020-21 FAFSA on file with Maryville University as of 02/22/2021
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Enrolled in a Degree seeking or certificate program as of 02/22/2021
- Demonstrate exceptional need based upon an official Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from the FAFSA as of 02/22/2021, with an EFC of 0-12,000. What is my Expected Family Contribution?
Students who meet the eligibility criteria will be notified, and will be automatically awarded funding in the spring 2021 term in the amounts as outlined in the chart below. EFC range is based on need calculated by the 2020-2021 FAFSA. The Federal HEERF II Emergency Grant is awarded on a one-time basis, and is not renewable.

HEERF II Emergency Grants will be processed through the student account and will be directly refunded to eligible students. Emergency Grants will not be applied to outstanding student account balances. Eligible students are recommended to setup an eRefund profile to obtain funding as quickly as possible. Distribution of Funding will begin March 1, 2021, with refunds processed by March 5, 2021.
Unfortunately, funding is not available to all students in need due to limited funding provided to Maryville through HEERF II and the requirement that the University prioritize funding for students with documented exceptional need. Thus, students without a FAFSA on file, or who have an EFC outside of the listed range will not be eligible for HEERF II Funding.
Cares Act Funding
In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Government has enacted the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act which provides institutions of higher education with funding to provide emergency assistance to students experiencing expenses related to the disruption of campus operations from the coronavirus, including eligible expenses under a student’s cost of attendance such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care.
